WHO WE ARE The following people have been involved in the development of the Ecosystem Health Program at the University of Western Ontario:
I
had the opportunity of leading curriculum renewal at UWO. The theme of
curriculum renewal was that of being patient-centered - meeting the unique
needs of a patient within their environment. A key component of the Patient-Centered
Method is understanding the context of the patient and understanding how
the context of patient interacts with their health. Ecosystem Health is
the study of the interaction of the environment with human health and,
therefore, was a key component of our new curriculum. Ecosystem Health
at UWO concentrates on developing leadership, stewardship and collaborative
skills - all skills needed in physicians.
My
interests in infectious diseases and the emergence of new ones, provided
me with a useful starting point for the subject of Ecosystem Health. It
has been fascinating for me to be able to delve into many other subjects
that link with this problem in ways that I had never appreciated. Teaching
Ecosystem Health has been a real educational experience for me.
I
have had the opportunity to be involved with many different subjects from
zoology to economics to ecology but for the last 20 years, or so, my passion
has been developing and explaining the concepts of ecosystem health. Seeing
this subject become part of the curriculum for students of medicine has
been exciting as the links between the health of the ecosystem and the
health of humans living in the system are becoming more important day
by day. |
